Fiorentina striker Adrian Mutu has been banned since mid-January after tests revealed a banned substance in his system.

The player has maintained that the results were due to some slimming tablets he purchased in Romania and it appears the evidence has supported his claim, meaning his ban, which was potentially set to rule him out for up to four years, may now only be a few months, according to his agent Giovanni Becali.

The player's agent was optimistic after a hearing that involved the Italian Olympic Committee's anti-doping prosecutor.

"My feeling is that he will be disqualified, but I think it will be no more than three to four months," he was quoted as saying by Il Corriere dello Sport after the hearing.

"Now, we just have to wait for the final verdict. Mutu showed the box of tablets, that had the direction of being 100 per cent natural.

"My impressions? This is not a murder case. He was wrong and acknowledged his mistake, which is only not having asked a doctor for advice before taking this product."

A decision regarding the former Chelsea and Juventus player's suspension is expected within 15 days.
