berlin is the first city in the world to open a stalker help centre, stalkers can go there to seek help while keeping their identity private in terms of public relations. should there be one in england? should stalkers get help from the tax payers? should they be named and shamed as you think they are sick people who just are fully aware of what they are doing? are they any different from sex offenders, surely if stalking is the first sign for some of them |

No causing trouble. Are they fully aware of what is going on? It's a mental condition so i'm not so sure they are. I guess they have a right to keep their identities private and fair play to them for recognising they have a problem and trying to do something about it by visiting the centre for help. You should worry more about the ones out there that just carry on their business as usual, they would be the biggest danger to the public. |

This centre has been started along with new legislation that makes stalking punishable by between 6 months and 10 years (if death occured as a result of stalking) Apparently stalking is a compulsive thing in a lot of cases, and also apparently quite a few people know that they have this thing and want to stop it. This is kind of meant to be a the carrot where the punishments are the stick. I quite like the idea, but like Flak said it's those people that don'ty go there that are the biggest worry. They ARE doing something illegal though. |

I agree with the above - the real problem stalkers are the ones who don't really see themselves as stalkers. Some people have already created a fantasy in their heads and believe they are simply making themselves available and getting ready to be with the object of their attention. I think these are the most dangerous ones because when they are rejected and the reality doesn't live up to the fantasy they flip out and turn nasty, even violent. There should always be help available for people who need it, though. If you are aware that you are paying someone too much unwanted attention and feel it's taking over your life you should be able to get help for that. I'm sure when my RvP love gets too weird even for me I'll be making my way to Berlin. |

also is the punishment they receive sufficient? like for example what would happen if you knew a stalker, would you just give them a few harsh words and then leave them? they then go on defending themselves by making up things when they realise they have been in the wrong also read in the paper the other day, lots of rapists are stalkers as well, pre planned ones stalk their victims for a while |

very difficult this because i would imagine most stalkers have mental health issues, not sure help centres are the answer if mentally ill/autistic people become celebrity/person obsessed its very hard to tell them its wrong i looked after a chap who walked 15 miles in the middle of the night to visit a member of staff couldnt persuade him otherwise and because of human rights he was allowed to toddle off |

no s**t einstein, I take it the opportunistic ones just pick their victims based on... erm the opportunity to? ![]() Stalkers suffer from an acute mental illness and I think if you can tackle even some of them through any sort of help and councilling it's a positive step forward and if it prevents one person becoming psychotic or committing a crime it can only be a good thing. There are those that won't come forward but we'll have to think of other ways to tackle that, ideally before they harm people and themselves. |
