This is it! My very first game for a club ever is on this Saturday in the cup qualification round! Any advice for a first game? I have played Aussie Rules my whole life and now I'm getting into football before I am too old to play. FLINDERS vs MOUNT BARKER (match report to come) |

I'm playing somewhere in the midfield I would be pretty sure, on the right side or in an attacking role. |

Get the simple things right first Cesc. Work hard for the team, always look for a pass if it's on. Don't go chasing the ball wherever it is on the pitch - that is a fatal error when you are just starting out trying to impress - stick to your position. I used to play CB/RB or GK so i can't help too much with midfield. Just stick to basics and do it well. |

Thats what I find is my biggest problem in the practise matches at training, I find myself tracking the ball everywhere so I start on right midfield and find myself in the thick of it on the left wing! |

Everybody does that when you start out. You see it all the time in kids football where all 20 outfield players are guaranteed never to be more than about 2 yds from the ball at all times ![]() If you stick to your position and look for space then you should be alright. Don't forget to track back but only when it is sensible, ie. not running over to LB to help out when you are played RW

Used to swap with our main GK at half time. He was insanely good, easily the best in the league. Mainly played RB as i got older and always playing with the age group a year above me coz that is who i went through primary school with. Spent 2 years in the top yeargroup while all of my friend went off to secondary school

I played mostly at RB as i wasnt very tall but very quick. I use to love going in goal but not being very tall doesnt help lol |

Cesc, ignore the above advice. Play for youself first and foremost, try tricks when they are not on and 40 yard efforts on goal. Take all set pieces, even throw in's. Don't defend set pieces, leave it to someone else. When the other team scores throw your hands up in disbelief. Make lots of hand gestures throughout, roll you're eyes when a pass is not exactly on your foot. When your score, don't celebrate with team mates, remember it's all about you. And lastly, never ever chase after the ball and tackle, it's too much effort and why waste energy really. |
